 GOVERNMENT CONSULTATIONS ON AVIATION STRATEGY 2017-2018 |
CALL FOR EVIDENCE
In October 2017, the Department for Transport (DfT) completed a consultation on the approach the government is proposing for the creation of a new Aviation Strategy setting out the long-term direction for aviation policy-making to 2050 and beyond. The first of a series of consultations scheduled to run over 18 months to the end of 2018, this Call for Evidence, invited comment on the proposed approach.
SSE submitted a 12-page submission in response, informed by advice from legal counsel, condemning the subordination of environmental protection and local community health and well-being to the objective of unbridled aviation growth and highlighting the flawed foundation set out by the DfT in its approach. SSE is particularly concerned at the overwhelming focus on the interests of air passengers and the aviation industry generally at the expense of those within the community who ultimately pay the price for expansion being proposed.

NEW AVIATION FORECASTS
Following the close of the foundation consultation, the Secretary of State for Transport, Chris Grayling, has presented a Ministerial Statement to the House of Commons (24 October 2017) announcing, amongst other things, the new UK aviation demand forecasts and projections for CO2 emissions, including expectations for Stansted Airport. SSE is currently reviewing these forecasts and will comment further in due course.
