Campaigning against proposals to expand Stansted Airport

image Press Release - 6 December 2009

Members of Stop Stansted Expansion joined forces with around 40,000 people in London on Saturday [5 December] as part of The Wave, a giant march and rally urging the Government to press for a strong and meaningful deal at this week's climate talks in Copenhagen.

Swapping the usual yellow placards for blue in keeping with the theme of the event, SSE supporters led by members of its executive committee delivered the message 'Stop Stansted Expansion - Yes We Can'. The march culminated with the encircling of the Houses of Parliament by a sea of campaigners dressed in blue, filling the streets and bridges.

Aviation is the fastest growing source of the emissions which contribute to climate change and urgent action is needed if emissions reductions targets are to be met. The government is committed to ensuring that aviation emits no more carbon in 2050 than it did in 2005 but it will be impossible to deliver on this promise if it builds new runways.
